Bird Photography Weekly #47

White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)

Certainly amongst my favorite of our more local sparrows, I particularly enjoy them in their alternate (breeding) plumage, which I find quite striking for a "little brown job." Not to mention that their distinctive "Poor Sam Peabody" (or "O sweet Canada" depending upon which side of the border you live on) loudly whistled is hard to miss - and often one of the first bird songs that many birders learn.

To see some great bird photos from around the world, check out:

Pretty sequence. This is the second White-throated Sparrow that I see for this meme this week.

A very nice series of photos. I especially like the detail on the head seen in the third photo.

He's beautiful! We get a lot of the little brown sparrows - not as colorful, but wonderful music!

Great captures of the White-throated Sparrow Chris! The third shot is truly exquisite. Nice colors and the background really brings out the colors of the bird. Well done!

Great pictures. Nice to see such a colorful fellow among the sparrows. They are a little drab in NYC.

Sparrows can't help looking cheeky. Nice portraiture.

...beautiful photos of one of my favorite little winter visitors. I miss them! I always love hearing their spring song before they leave for the north (even though I'm south of the border, it still sounds like "Oh sweet Canada, Canada, Canada" to me. :-)
