Ruby Meadowhawk (Sympetrum rubicundulum)Another day with dragonfly photos. This is a member of the
Sympetrum Meadowhawk dragonflies, but according to my "Field Guide to the Dragonflies and Damselflies opf Massachusetts," the White-faced, Ruby and Cherry-faced Meadowhawks are virtually indistinguishable in the field.
I don't think this is Cherry-faced based on location - as they are apparently rare in eastern MA, and the face doesn't seem quite "pure" enough to be White-faced" but hey- what do I know, other than I like seeing and photographing them!
OH - I should mention that if you click on the photos you can see larger versions of them - and I do recommend doing so!

I'd just like to go on record and say that that field guide is amazing. It's great for NJ too.
I just got my copy of the field guide today. Holy smoke! I've got a bit of studing ahead.
Wonderful photos.
Amazing shots Chris! Dragonflies sure do have weird faces. Kind of freaky! lol!
No, I have definitely not seen any red dragonflies around here that's for sure!
Good series on the dragonflies. Thanks for directions to the MIKI - found it with no trouble. Good looks, but poor light for pictures.
I, too, love the book, In fact, it was Patrick who recommended it to me. A little study in advance, and I was able to I.D. 8 Dragonfly species in my first, thrilling afternoon.
Thanks, Patrick!
I heard people rave about that guide for a while before I found anyplace that still had copies - glad I got one!
Love seeing your dragonfly pics
These are really wonderful
Thanks all for the compliments!
I started a discussion on Bugguide.net with one of my photos that I had posted with a meadow hawk. You might read what they had to say about them here...
